Dr Sergio Carmona
Sergio Carmona is a global health leader and medical doctor specialized in infectious diseases. Following a distinguished clinical and academic career, he joined FIND in 2019, where since February 2021, he has been Chief Medical Officer. His work at FIND spans a wide R&D portfolio of diagnostics for priority diseases, including tuberculosis, malaria, hepatitis, neglected tropical diseases and antimicrobial resistance, as well as a growing access and implementation programme focused on availability and affordability of high-quality tests and digital solutions in low- and middle-income countries. On the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic early in 2020, FIND was named co-convener of the Diagnostics Pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, in which Dr Carmona plays an instrumental role.
Prior to joining FIND, Dr Carmona spent over a decade at the NHLS in South Africa, specialized in molecular diagnostics and treatment monitoring for early infant diagnosis, HIV drug resistance and associated co-infections. He retains an academic affiliation to his alma mater, the University of the Witwatersrand, with research interests in molecular biology in pathology, and public health matters related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa. His research outputs have supported guidance in HIV diagnostics, and the management of patients presenting with advanced HIV disease. He has regularly participated in technical committees and initiatives led by the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the African Society of Laboratory Medicine and the South African National Department of Health.
Dr Carmona earned his medical degree (MBBCh) from the University of Witwatersrand before doing a Pathology Specialization (FCPath) in 2009, earning a PhD in Molecular Medicine and Haematology in 2018. A South African national with roots in Chile, Dr Carmona is proficient in English and Spanish.
